On Sunday morning Dr Liam Fox MP joined Cllr Reyna Knight and members of the Portishead Railway Group (PRG) following their decision to dismantle the large mural close to Lidl’s car park.
The mural which was painted by local artist, Aili Purdy, was originally unveiled by Dr Liam Fox MP on 28th April 2012. It has now been subject to two fierce winters and the framework is beginning to show its age. Colin Howells, the vice chair of the Portishead Railway Group explained that Persimmon Homes had kindly paid the public liability insurance for the mural for the current year, but when it expires the liability will become the responsibility of PRG, and as a voluntary campaign group they cannot take on that responsibility.
Mr Howells made it clear that the decision to take down the mural was taken some time ago and its removal was not as a result of the current station location discussions.
The Portishead Railway group are now seeking an individual or organisation who would like to give the beautiful and popular mural a temporary home and display it either inside or outside while negotiations to secure the Portishead railway and station proceed.
